Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political mobilization is a critical aspect of democratic engagement, as it empowers citizens to participate actively in the political process and influences political outcomes (Oluwaseun, 2023). In Nigeria, political mobilization is essential, particularly in regions like Gusau Local Government, Zamfara State, where the electorate has historically been marginalized in the political decision-making process. Print media, including newspapers, plays a pivotal role in shaping public opinion, informing voters, and mobilizing political support (Akinmolayan & Usman, 2024). The media acts as a bridge between political leaders and the masses, enabling communication about policies, party agendas, and candidate performances. In Gusau, a region characterized by political challenges, print media serves as a tool for both political elites and grassroots activists to galvanize political engagement, promote awareness, and address the concerns of the populace. However, the extent of the print media's influence on political mobilization remains a subject of debate. This study seeks to explore the ways in which print media, through its coverage of political events, policies, and candidates, influences the political mobilization of citizens in Gusau Local Government. The research will examine how the local newspapers serve as a catalyst for political participation and democratic engagement, thereby fostering a politically conscious and active electorate.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the significant role that print media plays in political mobilization, there is a lack of empirical research examining its specific influence in Gusau Local Government, Zamfara State. In an environment where political apathy and low voter turnout are significant issues, the role of local newspapers in encouraging active participation in elections and political discourse is under-researched. The coverage of political events, electioneering activities, and government policies by local newspapers may either inspire political engagement or contribute to further alienation of the electorate. The problem lies in understanding how these newspapers shape the political awareness and behavior of the people of Gusau, especially considering the diverse socio-political dynamics at play in the region. Additionally, the extent to which political mobilization facilitated by print media translates into tangible political actions, such as voting behavior or active participation in local governance, is unclear. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing the influence of print media in fostering political mobilization in Gusau.
